A good heating and air conditioning system is critical for regulating your air quality–especially during the incendiary summers and chilly winters in Auburn, North Carolina when opening the windows to get airflow and ventilation is not an option.
Poor indoor air quality can lead to a range of health problems, including respiratory issues, headaches, and fatigue. Today, we’re going to look at three common indoor air pollutants, how they can affect your health, and how you can mitigate such issues and keep your air clean (here’s a hint: your HVAC system plays an important role)!
Dust is everywhere. It’s probably the most common indoor air pollutant, and it can come from pet dander, pollen, dirt, and even your own body, among many other sources both inside and outside your home. Dust can cause a range of health problems (especially as it accumulates), including allergies and asthma.
Regular cleaning and vacuuming can go a long way towards keeping dust levels down, but a good HVAC system (and regular filter replacements, which we’ll keep raving about until the day we die) can reduce the amount of dust that is constantly circulated through your space.
Mold is a type of fungus that grows in damp environments. It can be found in areas with high humidity–especially rooms like bathrooms and basements. Everyone knows that mold can cause various health problems, including allergies, skin irritation, illness, and damage to your respiratory system in severe cases.
To prevent mold growth, it’s important to keep your indoor environment dry and well-ventilated. Incidentally, those are two functions that heating,
ventilation, and air conditioning systems perform exceptionally well (if yours is not meeting muster, give us a call if you’re in Auburn, Clayton, Wendell, or any nearby areas of North Carolina). HVAC systems keep air moving, and they suck the intense humidity out of the Wake County air in the summer. That helps prevent stagnant and mold-friendly areas from developing in your home.
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are chemicals that can be found in a range of household products, including cleaning supplies, paints, and air fresheners. These chemicals can be released into the air and cause a range of health problems, including headaches, nausea, and eye irritation. To reduce your exposure to VOCs, you may want to use products that are low in VOCs or that are labeled as environmentally friendly. Of course, good ventilation will always help keep VOC levels in a reasonable range as well!
