Three common problems with air conditioners that are easy to repair yourself

If you think your AC needs repaired, check to make sure the batteries aren't dead in your thermostat!

Some people like to hand off repairs (especially on complex systems like air conditioning units) to professionals to take care of things. It saves them stress, time, and often money.

But if you’re anything like us over at All Hours, if you’re able to fix a problem on your own you may want to take a crack at it yourself before you call in the specialists. Of course, some problems are serious enough that professional help makes sense. Unless you have the expertise, tools, and parts laying around to repair an air conditioner yourself, you’ll generally want to call a good tech if your AC compressor craps out and your unit stops blowing cold air. Who wants to suffer in stifling Wake County heat?

But sometimes seemingly big problems can be fixed quickly and easily. This article is about three problems with your AC system that you might be able to troubleshoot yourself. (And don’t worry if things don’t work out. We’re always on standby to help on your schedule).

1. Your AC won’t blow cold air

Many things could be wrong if your air conditioner is turning on but won’t blow cold air. You could have problems with your refrigerant levels, pressure, pipes, condenser, or compressor. Those are all problems you should call a professional to fix.

But before you do, take a look at your filter. Have you changed it recently? Is it blocking things up? If air is not flowing correctly through your system, your AC will have trouble circulating air as needed to cool your home. If it’s been a while, change that dirty filter for a few bucks and (fingers crossed) you might be back in business!

2. Your AC won’t turn on altogether

If your air conditioner won’t turn on or cycle at all, another slew of things could be wrong with your unit or system. But before you call an HVAC technician to diagnose the problem, it’s worth checking a few things first really quick.

First, check the batteries in your thermostat and make sure all the settings are right (i.e. it’s set to cool your home and pump the heat out). It might sound obvious, but sometimes thermostats will get messed with, and sometimes batteries will die. Two seconds could save you time, money, and embarrassment!

Second, check your breaker box and make sure nothing has been tripped. Sometimes all you have to do is reset a switch to bring your unit back to life!

3. Your outdoor AC unit is freezing up

If your outdoor air conditioner is freezing up, a pro will usually need to come out and make some relatively serious repairs. However, this is another case where you should check your air filter before giving anyone a call. If the filter is blocked or clogged, your unit will not receive sufficient airflow, which will cause parts like evaporator coils to freeze. Give the filter a look and see if an easy fix can save the day!

If all else fails or these problems repeat, give us a call or send us a request through our contact form. We’ll get out to you quickly and get things sorted out. (And if you missed this post and forgot to check small or obvious components, we won’t judge you too hard).

When it comes to HVAC units, the choice of brand is a key consideration. We love York units because they offer, in our opinion, the greatest quality/price balance; premium quality at a competitive price compared to other leading brands.

Your HVAC system is critical for your home's comfort, but have you considered how your thermostat's age could impact its efficiency? Despite its small size on the wall, an old thermostat might actually be contributing to your higher cooling costs.

With Wendell's humid summers, your AC must have enough power to efficiently remove humidity from your air. Humidity levels that are too high or too low can lead to various issues, from discomfort and mold growth to respiratory problems.
