Lots of things happen in Washington, D.C. that many of us will never hear about. A lot of red tape and regulations will never directly affect your daily life or finances.
However, some regulations do affect entire industries in substantial ways that affect you and your family. Today, we’re looking at one such regulation that could spike the prices of HVAC units. This regulation from our friends at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will affect all homeowners, so if you’re reading this, share this blog with your friends and family.
The DOE as of Jan. 1, 2023, will require new HVAC units to meet greater standards of energy efficiency. The rule doesn’t apply to the northern states, but all new HVAC units in the Southeast region (of which North Carolina is a part) will need to meet more stringent energy efficiency standards.
The energy savings will be slight and probably won’t save the world from fossil fuels, but the costs for initial installations will increase (probably substantially).
How much installation costs will increase after Jan. 1, 2023, has yet to be seen, but we've seen estimates in the ballpark of 30-50%.
The regulation will force people like you as well as homebuilders and HVAC companies like ours to compete for more expensive parts, exacerbating a bottleneck that already existed with 2022's supply chain difficulties.
If you are considering replacing or upgrading your AC system, even if the thought only crossed your mind in passing, now is the time. We have about four months left before the end of the year. After that, HVAC costs will increase for homeowners.
