How to keep your furnace running efficiently during the winter

All Hours Staff • October 26, 2022

Winter is approaching quickly in Wendell, NC. Temperatures are dropping, grass is frosting at night, and breath is turning to steam.

Meanwhile, you’re inside, kept warm by your HVAC and furnace system. But heating can be pricey, especially these days with the cost of fossil fuels (especially if you have an oil-burning furnace).

Here is our top five list of ways you can reduce your stress and keep warm without breaking the bank!

Make sure your vents are clear

This might be obvious, but your furnace is only going to do its best work if air can make it out of the vents! Make sure your vents are open. Make sure your kids don’t have toys sitting on them. Keep your furniture and curtains away from the vents as well.

You’d be shocked at how many people are not mindful of their vents and can’t figure out why their rooms are freezing cold!

Keep your filter clear

We are always talking about HVAC filters because they are the bottlenecks of your system, and they determine the quality of the air your family breathes. Is it easier to breathe through a straw or a snorkel tube? If you force your system to breathe through straw (or in this case, a dirty filter) for a long period of time, it’ll have a similar response to your body. It’ll start to malfunction, the strain will eventually start affecting your furnace’s long-term health, and if it gets too bad it’ll shut down.

The solution is simple: change your filter regularly.

Schedule seasonal maintenance

Yes, you read that right. Your resistance to hiring an HVAC pro to regularly clean and inspect your system could actually be costing you money.

For one, unmaintained units do not live as long as furnaces that are kept in good condition. A few extra years, on average, out of your furnace can save you bundles of cash long-term. And regular maintenance can also save you money in the short term, because your furnace simply will not work as efficiently with dirty, old, poorly maintained parts.

When it comes to HVAC units, the choice of brand is a key consideration. We love York units because they offer, in our opinion, the greatest quality/price balance; premium quality at a competitive price compared to other leading brands.

Your HVAC system is critical for your home's comfort, but have you considered how your thermostat's age could impact its efficiency? Despite its small size on the wall, an old thermostat might actually be contributing to your higher cooling costs.
humid steam

With Wendell's humid summers, your AC must have enough power to efficiently remove humidity from your air. Humidity levels that are too high or too low can lead to various issues, from discomfort and mold growth to respiratory problems.
